As a French intern, born and raised in Paris, I am in a good position to say that we do not have a lot of wedding planners, even over the last few years being a wedding planner has become increasingly attractive !
Most people organize their wedding themselves with family’s or friend’s help, whereas it is so common to call a wedding planner in the United States. While in the United States, I was lucky enough to get to help out Pure Ambiance Event Design with one of their weddings.
During this special occasion, I noticed that French weddings are slightly different in many ways:
Firstly, we do have a civil marriage ceremony the same day before the religious ceremony
Secondly, we usually have the “throwing the brides’ bouquet” after the church, whereas American brides do it after the reception. Therefore, in France, after the religious ceremony the guest throw rice to the newlyweds as a sign of prosperity and fertility.
Thirdly, we do not have a singer for the religious ceremony while in the United States it is very common.
Then, I discovered the concept of a Photobooth at the reception (It is pretty cool and I will definitely have one for my wedding in Paris !!! )
I also recognized in France , we don’t have “hors d’oeuvre” for guests or private cocktail for bride and groom before the reception, we only have the dinner.
And finally, the design decoration for tables is very elaborate with a lot of candles and lights, whereas in France we privilege sober and purified decoration. With that being said, it also depends on wether a designer is responsible. Generally, French wedding is “less bling-bling” and more simplistic. American weddings are more ornate with a lot of sparkle and gleam.
Traditionally, in a French wedding, after the reception we offer a little box of “dragées” for the guests, it symbolizes the joys and sorrows of life. We usually offer 5 “dragées” which represent 5 vows: fertility, happiness, prosperity, health and longevity. It is also a souvenir for this beautiful day.
However, all weddings are not similar, every wedding is unique, and mainly depends on your own traditions, beliefs, desires, personal creativity, and the country where it takes place.
It remains for most women, one of their best beautiful memories.
Moreover, I wanted to encourage all women to think about hiring a wedding planner for their special day.
Indeed, she or he will support you with all the organization from the beginning to the end, she or he will make sure you are not stressed because you deserve to enjoy planning such an important day.
Please also take a look at our past post “Perks of hiring an event planner” ! It will give you all the benefits of sharing this day with a professional !
